The YMCA Conference on National Affairs (CONA) is an annual leadership and civic engagement program that brings together college students, young professionals, and emerging leaders from across the United States. Founded in 1968 at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina, CONA was created to cultivate informed, responsible leaders prepared to engage in public service and address national and global challenges.
Our Mission:
CONA empowers young adults to develop their leadership skills, engage thoughtfully with pressing societal issues, and become active, informed citizens. Through workshops, simulations, debates, and collaborative projects, participants gain a deeper understanding of government, public policy, and community leadership.
Program Highlights:
-
Policy Simulations & Debates: Participants role-play as policymakers or stakeholders to explore solutions to real-world issues.
-
Networking & Mentorship: Attendees connect with peers and leaders, building lifelong relationships and professional networks.
-
Action-Oriented Learning: Small-group projects foster ideas that participants can implement in their own communities.
Notable Alumni:
Over the decades, CONA alumni have gone on to serve in government, nonprofit leadership, education, and civic organizations. Distinguished alumni include U.S. Senators, governors, and leaders in national and international nonprofits, reflecting the program’s enduring impact on shaping responsible and effective leaders.
Why CONA Matters Today:
For more than 55 years, CONA has been a premier program for cultivating civic-minded leadership. Its themes evolve with the times, addressing issues from civil rights and economic policy to climate change, social equity, and political engagement. Participants leave prepared to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the nation.
